It is with untold sadness that our Club suffered the loss of Rotarian Sandy Lundberg on June 26th when her courageous fight with cancer was over. We first met Sandy in 2013 when a few of us went to her Arizona College Preparatory-Oakland campus where she was the principal. What an extraordinarily, caring woman! Then she joined our Rotary Club and brought her joy to our meetings. We called her “the Happy Hugger.” She always greeted all of us with hugs, smiles, and enthusiasm...
When Casteel High School was established in 2015, Sandy was appointed its first Principal. From the outset of its founding, Sandy said, “We have tried to build our school to be uncommon.” At Casteel, she taught students to say, “I don’t get this right now,” rather than just, “I don’t get this” to reinforce that they can learn anything. Dr. Camille Casteel, Superintendent of CUSA said, “She is one of the most exceptional educational leaders I have had the privilege to work with in the Chandler Unified School District.”

Two months ago, Sandy was given our first “Educator of the Year” award. As Club President Peter Meade said, “Sandy is the crème de la crème -- a true leader whose purpose and passion for education made her the unanimous choice for this award.”

On Monday July 9th, there will be a visitation-Memorial service for Sandy at Rock Point Church, 24759 South Power Road, Queen Creek from 5 to 8 p.m. All are welcome. Then the next day, July 10th, there will be a funeral service at the same church starting at 9 a.m. She will be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery at 7900 East Main Street, Mesa Arizona 85207.

In lieu of flowers, the family has created a college fund for her daughters. Our Club is donating toward that college fund. Individual Rotarians are encouraged to do the same.
