Arizona Corporation Commission

Bill Mundell served for nine years, 1999-2008, on the Arizona Corporation Commission. When he chaired the Commission, Arizona became one of the first states to require utilities generate a percentage of their electricity from renewable energy sources. Those early decisions laid the groundwork for the 2006 enactment of the current statewide Renewable Energy Standard Tariff (REST). Bill ran for Corporation Commission in 2016, and was narrowly defeated despite Pinnacle West (APS’ parent company) spending up to $10 million to defeat him.

Bill started his public service career fighting corruption in Chandler, and later became Presiding Judge of the Chandler Municipal Court. He next served in the Arizona House of Representatives where he was appointed Chair of the House Environment Committee.  As Chair, he sponsored numerous pieces of legislation protecting Arizona‘s environment, including the state’s first recycling law, a law preventing Arizona from becoming the nation’s dumping ground for hazardous waste, a law prohibiting landfills in river bottoms, and a law protecting the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. He then served for nine years on the Arizona Corporation Commission. Bill is married with two daughters. His wife, Barbara, was the first woman, and the first person of color, presiding judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court.
