M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D. is the son of Syrian immigrants who fled Ba’athist oppression in 1966. Dr. Jasser is a physician, a former U.S. Lieutenant Commander, and President and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (“AIFD”) a Phoenix based counter-Islamic think tank founded in 2003. He is also a co-founder of the Muslim Reform Movement and a former Vice-Chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, appointed by the U.S. Senate from 2012-2016. Zuhdi is an internationally recognized expert on Islamism and is widely published in the field. He will share with us his perspective on today’s Moslem/Islam world. |

Introduce AIM Peñasco

Kathleen Duncan is a Director of Steps of Love, a non-profit that works to keep children in school, not only through direct support and homework clubs for the students, but also economic and vocational support for the parents. In 2015 she formed the Mexican non-profit organization AIM Peñasco and by 2016 she had launched a program to provide local kids with a path out of poverty through education. She is working with the Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) Rotary Club to develop a Global Grant. |

Pam Hunsaker, United States West Regional Director of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, will share with us insight and additional information about the organization. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Republic of Ireland. Katie Kahle is the Director of the Chandler CARE Center, a position she has held since 2012. As director of the Center, Katie oversees daily operations, staffing, recruiting of partners and volunteers, program development and implementation, and fund-raising. Prior to working for the CARE Center, Katie was the Outreach and Community Development Manager for the Arizona Community Action Association, overseeing anti-hunger work statewide and managing a grant partnership that provided funding to more than 40 community partner agencies. Katie has experience with oversight of budgets, programming, events, and work with volunteers and interns. Katie is an Arizona native who grew up in Tempe and attended Arizona State University where she obtained both a Bachelor of Social Work with a minor in Justice Studies and a Master in Social Work with a concentration in Planning, Administration, and Community Practice. Katie has lived in Chandler since 2007. |

Matthew House is a Chandler non-profit that builds bridges between refugees and the resources they need to access as they rebuild their lives here. Currently, Matthew House is coordinating the volunteers that serve meals and teach English to the Afghan evacuees that the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is processing and housing at a Chandler hotel. Leisa McDonald, Executive Director of Matthew House AZ Inc, will share with us background on this nonprofit organization, assisting Afghan evacuees, bridging divides, and creating opportunities for refugee and immigrant neighbors in the East Valley of Phoenix. |
