Welcome to our Rotary Club!  Meet our new member, Dennis Nelson who was raised in North Henderson, Illinois.  His passion growing up was Baseball and Fast-pitch Softball.  He came west for his college education at Arizona State University where he received his degree in Education...
He then left Arizona to teach school in Torrance, California and while there he met his wife, Sonja, who had graduated from the University of Montana and was also a teacher.  The two of them then moved back to Arizona in 1971 and both became teachers in the Mesa Public Schools.  While there, Dennis achieved his Master’s and Doctorate Degrees and then became the Director of Curriculum for Mesa Schools until retirement in 2002.  Additionally, while doing all this, he taught evening/week-end university classes for 35 years, as well as being a math consultant across the country to schools and publishing companies.   Before his retirement he was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arizona Association of Teachers of Mathematics and was also inducted into the Arizona State University Alumni Hall-of-Fame for his contributions to education.  Now retired in Sun Lakes since 2002, he and Sonja have 2 children and enjoy their 4 grandchildren.  Welcome Dennis to the Sun Lakes Rotary Club.
